Project Overview:

To install a new Langley felted roof system to a block of flats after their existing roofing system failed, causing numerous leaks to the apartments in the building.

Phase 1: Scaffolding & Site Preparation:

Challenges:

  • Ensuring safe access to the roof for workers and materials
  • Avoiding disruption to building occupants
  • Weather conditions impacting scaffolding stability

Solution:

  • Designed a full perimeter scaffold system with debris netting for safety
  • Used hoists and lifting equipment for material transport
  • Conducted thorough risk assessments and compliance checks (CDM regulations, edge protection, fall arrest systems)

Phase 2: Roof Preparation & Removal:

Challenges:

  • Stripping old roof without damaging the structure
  • Managing waste disposal and minimizing dust/debris
  • Avoiding water ingress during the transition period

Solution:

  • Phased removal strategy to keep sections watertight
  • Installed temporary waterproof sheeting after stripping each section
  • Used Langley-approved waste management and disposal methods

Phase 3: Installation of Langley Felted Roof System:

Challenges:

  • Ensuring proper adhesion and bonding of felt layers
  • Managing temperature and weather conditions for best application results
  • Compliance with Langley’s specifications for warranty eligibility

Solution:

  • Applied Langley-approved primer before installing the underlay
  • Installed a two-layer high-performance bituminous felt system
  • Used hot air welding and mechanical fixing methods for durability
  • Conducted quality control inspections at each stage

Phase 4: Final Inspection & Handover:

  • Full Langley warranty compliance check
  • Joint inspection with client and Langley representatives
  • Provided maintenance guidelines and recommended inspection schedules

Outcome:

  • Successfully installed a durable, waterproof, and energy-efficient roof
  • Minimal disruption to building operations
  • Achieved Langley system warranty certification
